In Ibiza of the Coast of Spain, thousands of partygoers descend on the beaches of the island, looking to dance and dance to Europe's top DJ's.'
The famous club in Ibiza, Amnesia, is just one of 7 main super clubs on “the circuit” can hold up to 5,000 people on its dance floor, as Electronica music floods the speakers. While a party of that size is pretty unimaginable in Barbados, certainly the fans of Electronica seem to be growing.
One need only think about DJ Carlos' "Essential Mix" radio show which plays Friday nights on Mix 96, to recognise that there is an audience who thirst for house, downbeat, progressive and some of the “Balearic beat” of Electronica parties.
The Aqua Restaurant and Lounge, already known as a trendy hang-out for young professionals, has become the new locale for Sector 6, the DJ group headed by DJ Carlos.
Perhaps recognising that to replicate a club like "Amnesia" may not be so easy, the party producers have instead called the event 'Aqua Del Mar" after the "Café Del Mar" located in San Antonio, Ibiza, just to the west of the West End. A popular summer tourist destination noted for its view of the local sunset. Café Del Mar is a small bar that plays and releases annual albums with ambient, easy listening music that reflect their smaller party.
The first Aqua Del Mar held on November 20th was a smaller party. However, the music offered was not the ambient trill of "Café Del mar" but rather a mix of Balearic beat", house and lots of trance. DJ Carlos offered up the different genres to satiate the rabid Electronica fans - who donned glow bands and jumped straight on to the dance floor - and the many "newbies" who were hearing the songs for the first time.
They also made sure to "go all out" by adding a light wall behind the DJ booth that throbbed with the music, and lighted boxes on which sexy, dancing girls cavorted all night. The drinks were two for one and the music went on steadily for hours.
"WhoHOOO this party is awesome!" One guy screamed out as the bright green lights played over the small but energetic crowd.
"If you build it, they will come" may be true in movie but in Barbados building it is just the beginning - Sector 6 know you've got to throw a good party too and they seem to be building that for their fans.
Aqua Del Mar is to continue one Sunday every month at the Aqua Restaurant and Lounge.
