One on One with Rihanna

ImageNo doubt, Rihanna is blowing up all over the world, but even with the buzz surrounding the artist, there remains an air of mystery. Of course, we’ve seen the interviews and the press releases, and we know the basics: she was discovered by Evan Rogers, and prior to the Jay-Z meeting, she’d never met a celebrity before. But other questions still linger…Does she plan to pursue a college education? And then there’s the more important stuff, like, y’know…what’s her favourite colour. CiRCUIT gets one-on-one with the “Bajan Princess” and finds out more.

Favourite Hangout spot in Barbados: The Boatyard

Favourite colour: Green

Favourite movie: Napoleon Dynamite

Favourite actors: Terrence Howard… and Denzel Washington

Favourite actresses: Jessica Alba and Halle Berry

Favourite entertainer: Beyoncé

Favourite dessert: Cheesecake or chocolate ice cream

Any pets: A turtle

Favourite TV show: Entourage

Any siblings: Younger brothers…aged 15 and 9

You’re 17 and therefore certain decisions are made for you.  For instance, you must have a tutor. How many hours per week are you tutored?

15 hrs per week

Do you plan to pursue a college education?

Of course!

In what areas?
Business and Psychology

Why? Because I’m in a business where I have to know about business management, and Psychology is something I’ve always been interested in. I like analysing people…I’m very good at it.

Bachelors level only or to Masters level? As far as I can go. I would like to go as far as possible…but I still have to learn how to manage the time and just y’know, manage both my career and studying.

Have you given any thought to diversification of your talents beyond singing?  Will you be considering a career in acting or modelling, or is singing the ‘end all’ for you?
Acting!…definitely acting. I would love to get into modelling as well…I would love to.

Were you planning on seriously pursuing a singing career before being noticed by Evan Rogers?  Yeah! Always! All my life….

If not for the Def Jam link, would you have used soca and Crop Over as a platform to break into the music biz like other Bajans have done?
No, I don’t think I would’ve…’cuz that wasn’t my style. I admire calypsonians for what they do and how they perform…because that’s them…but that’s not me….

Are there any charities you would like to work with in the future?
Charities? Yeah, I’m actually working with one now…an AIDS charity for kids and then I did a benefit for children with cancer…

I understand you were in cadets… uh-huh…yeah…approximately for 5 years.

Can you play any musical instruments? No, I don’t…not yet…

Not yet? Does that mean that you’re planning to?  Yes…the acoustic guitar, or the keyboard or piano.

How do you handle that celebrity status? I handle it very well…just gotta keep grounded and stay humble...but enjoy it all.

Do you worry about getting too famous and not being able to separate your personal life from your public life?  No, not at all.

One word to describe yourself would be? Down-to-earth….but that’s not one word (laughing)…

You absolutely cannot do without…?  My cell phone…besides the obvious like family and friends.

Any misperceptions about you?  Not that I know of…not as far as I know…

Are you health conscious or do you eat basically anything you can get your hands on? A bit of both…I could be very health conscious…but I like to enjoy my meals….

What’s a typical day for Rihanna?  How many times per week do you work out?  At least 3 times per week….I try to get it in but with my schedule…time is really tight. We perform almost every day…

What do you do to relax? Listen to music

Do you listen to your own CDs? Yeah…of course!

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Pray

Second thing?  Brush my teeth (laughing).

What do you request when you’re travelling/when on tour? Just honey.  Honey is the most important thing…for my voice.

Do you write any of your own songs? I co-wrote a lot of the songs on the album.

How often do you get to visit Barbados? Not very often.

Considering your busy schedule, have you been able to maintain relationships with Bajan friends? Of course! Everyday
