Home FEATURES Peter Ram: Ya Dun know! |
|
He’s a veteran Bajan performer, belting out hits long before the Bogle was the latest dance craze. He’s arguably one of the fastest and most fluent freestylers on the island, soca’s version of rap’s Twista, known for hyping up crowds by incorporating rapid-fire freestyle chants into his live performances. It is this hype that has taken Peter Ram to stages throughout the Caribbean region, London, New York and Canada.
His style, a gritty vocal honed by more than 17 years in the music industry, is versatile enough to fit into just about any genre. Although primarily a solo act, some of Peter Ram’s most impressive works are as collaborations. His gruff chant in Love Will Never Let You Down, a mellow soca-infused R&B number with Toni Norville, added a flair that made the track memorable – even to slow jam haters.
In Top Class Bubbla, a collaboration with Square One, Ram chants “you don’t hafta dance nasty me breddren” while Alison Hinds coos “Ahhh, bwoy…” This combo of Ram and Hinds laced on a smooth soca beat demonstrates the adaptability of Peter Ram. It’s not just the delivery of rapid pace lyrics that has popularised Ram as an artist – it’s his ability to adjust to the music at hand.
Even though he’s maintained the style which made his ol’ dub Skettel a favourite, over the years, Ram has been able to adapt to the musical trends which have evolved. He’s made a mark for himself in social commentaries, bashment riddims, soca and just about a little of everything else. One of his more recent works include Thunderclap in Hindi off Lethal Studio’s soca/East Indian hybrid Dandy Masti album.
Ram’s track record as a writer is also impressive. Aside from his own works, he’s been involved in writing a number of popular tracks, including Square One’s Top Class Bubbla, Get Ready To Wine, Fireworks, Do As Ya Want and Confidence. He’s also worked with Timmy on Courvoisier and Up and Down.
As far as musical influences are concerned, interestingly enough, listening to Sizzla is a must before any writing of a social commentary can being. And as far as getting hyped up before a live performance, it’s Vibez Cartel all the way.
He’s landed an endorsement contract with Puma athletic wear via local retailer Total Sport -- a signal that Caribbean entertainers, like their global counterparts are being increasingly identified by marketers as having the potential to influence the buying patterns of the general public.
Ram notes that a number of persons have assisted him in his career. He mentions Splashband, Arturo Tappin, Mikey ‘Red Dog’ Hulsmeier, Terry Arthur, Deepu, a number of studios and DJs, and sponsors including Tropicana Jewellers and Protab.
Ram is currently working with a number of up-and-coming soca artistes, and notes the importance fo mental attitude in surviving as an entertainer. “Attitude is more important than fact…” he quips with a smile, “…more important than fact.” Quick Facts Preferred game-station: Playstation Favourite pastime: Rollerskating Alma Mater: St. George Secondary Favourite movie: Swordfish featuring Halle Berry’s soul-bearing performance Favourite pair of kicks: Pumas Beverage of choice: Coconut water
